One of the most common questions I get asked is “What is SEO”?

Let me start by explaining the SEO meaning.

SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimisation, which is a mouthful and thus easier to simply say SEO.

So then, what is SEO exactly?

In a nutshell SEO refers to the process of getting a website to rank on Google’s front page, preferably #1 of course.

 

There are two main factors at play when discussing SEO, the first is content and the second is backlinks.

Here are the most important considerations for each…

1. Website Content

Some people will tell you content is King when in truth it’s only half the picture.

What do I mean?

You can build the best content in the world but if nobody links to it or shares it, does it exist?

Not in the eyes of Google.

Content is however the foundation, and without a strong SEO foundation your entire building will collapse.

 

What’s the most important consideration?

Dwell time.

What is dwell time?

It is the time a visitor spends on your site.

If Google has two sites on the same topic with the same backlinks, but visitors spend 5 minutes on site A and only 2 minutes on site B, guess what?

Site A gets the top position.

This is simple logic.

We spend time on things we enjoy and if a user spends more time on Site A versus Site B, Google deems it more valuable and boosts the rankings.

 

How to Improve Dwell Time?

Build great content that engages the user.

Provide information or entertainment, add media, lists, infographics, video, surveys, polls or anything you can think of that keeps a visitor on your site longer than your competition.

Capture their attention and keep it in other words.

2. Backlinks

What are backlinks?

Backlinks are links from other websites pointing to yours.

You can think of links to your site as votes in an election, the candidate with the highest number of QUALITY backlinks, wins the vote.

If content is the foundation then backlinks are the signals that tell Google your content is popular.

The most challenging aspect of SEO is generating backlinks.

This is one reason your local SEO company may try convince you they’re not important, but look use a tool like ahrefs or MOZ and lookup any top ranked site in a competitive niche and you’ll notice the best have a ton of backlinks.

There are many effective ways to get backlinks, here are a few ideas

  • Create great content and reach out to your competitors link partners
  • Design infographics and submit them to infographic directories
  • Create effective Press Releases
  • Build informative content using lists
  • Provide valuable market research data
  • Try Native advertising
  • List your site in quality web directories
  • Guys post on popular portals
  • Reach out to influencers

These are a few ideas that if implemented correctly will get you enough links to rank your website in 98% of markets.
